Also only a matter of time? Northwestern's slip back into irrelevance.

Re: NCAA football 2023
Either Fitz knew what was going on or he didn't.
If he knew, he obviously allowed it to go on. If he didn't know, he lost control of the program.
Either way, he's gotta go. Both are fireable offenses.

Seems like Army is good for a big upset or near upset every season.
What’s the state of Navy these days? Honestly couldn’t say.

TBT Matt Baker weighs in on Florida college football.
Setting the bar for Florida, FSU, USF, UCF and Miami
With Big 12 media days behind us, SEC media days ongoing, and ACC and AAC events coming next week, it’s college football talkin’ season. I’m still digesting the preseason magazines sitting next to me, and my Associated Press top 25 ballot has 19 blank slots. While I continue to formulate my final predictions for the fall, here are my initial, reasonable expectations for the state’s five biggest programs:
Florida: Make a bowl game and hold onto a great recruiting class. It’s hard to believe that playing in the Birmingham Bowl would be a successful year at this proud program, but that’s where I see the Gators thanks to a mediocre SEC roster and arguably the toughest schedule in the nation. It’s fair to expect UF to show on-field improvement, even if it only results in a 6-6 regular season. The bigger long-term sign will be whether a middling record weakens a class that sits No. 3 nationally. If Billy Napier can retain those recruits, that will be a great sign for the Gators’ future.
Florida State: Win the ACC and make the College Football Playoff. Considering the Seminoles’ recent struggles, a playoff-or-bust mentality doesn’t seem fair ... but here we are. Playoff or bust. Mike Norvell has had a relatively stable staff and has built a roster that can (and should) win now, especially with Clemson wobbling. Standout quarterback Jordan Travis is in his final season, so this looks like FSU’s window to break through from very good to great.
USF: Improve as the season goes on. Forgive the coaching cliche, but it applies. Even though Alex Golesh turned over half the roster in his first offseason, it’s going to take time to elevate a team that has been among the worst in the country. USF’s last seven games are against Alabama Birmingham, Florida Atlantic, UConn, Memphis, Temple, Texas San Antonio and Charlotte. That’s three AAC newcomers plus two other teams that should be in the bottom third of the country. The Bulls don’t have to win all or any of them, but competitive performances would be an encouraging sign as Golesh works through his first season as a head coach.
Miami: Get a statement victory. Mario Cristobal’s 5-7 first season and the loss to Middle Tennessee raised a lot of doubts in my mind about his ability to manage games and maximize the excellent talent he signs. He’ll have plenty of chances to prove himself this year with marquee matchups against Texas A&M and Clemson, plus North Carolina and Florida State on the road. Let’s see if Cristobal can win one of them. Beating a team with comparable or greater talent will tell me as much, if not more, about Cristobal’s long-term prospects than an uneventful 7-5 or 8-4 season.
UCF: Be competitive as Big 12 rookies. Seven of the conference’s 10 members finished between 3-6 and 6-3 in league play last year, and the conference will probably have a large middle class again this fall. I don’t expect the Knights to have the depth to challenge Texas, Oklahoma or Kansas State for the conference title in Year 1, but UCF can be in the bloated next tier with teams like Baylor, Oklahoma State and Kansas. That’d be a fine Power Five debut.

The Big Ten preseason media poll is in and one thing is crystal clear:
Michigan is expected to dominate.
JJ McCarthy is expected to win the Heisman

Re: NCAA football 2023
The former is somewhat expected. The latter? Not sure about that, but he has definite traits and I'm excited to see what he can do this year.
He plays better than his stats imo, and his stats are pretty solid.

Breaking: Michigan Football and the NCAA are negotiating a resolution to an investigation into the Wolverines' recruiting practices that would result in a four-game suspension for HC Jim Harbaugh, a source told Pete Thamel.
Harbaugh would serve the suspension to start the season, the source said.

Re: NCAA football 2023
The Big Ten reportedly has started the process of exploring adding Oregon and Washington. The B1G is also looking at possibly adding Cal and Stanford to expand to 20 teams.
The talks are in the early stages and nothing is finalized.

Your move SECBreaking: The Big Ten is expected to move ahead with formal offer letters for Oregon and Washington, sources tell Pete Thamel.
Sources said a vote by the conference later today is expected to be unanimous.

Re: NCAA football 2023
The way the SEC media deal is done, the SEC only gets more money by adding new markets so Clemson and FSU are worthless to the SEC

Re: NCAA football 2023
Taking a look at it should be smart, for sure.
Not sure how I'd redo the playoffs with all this realignment stuff. I've advocated for years that all the Power-5 conference winners should get automatic playoff bids with three spots available at large for a total of eight teams, but these days I don't know.
Re: NCAA football 2023
Agreed. Can still do it with the 4 winners of SEC/B1G/ACC/Big12 and top 4 at large. But if the ACC dissolves and we have 3 twenty something team conferences, then just do top 8.Cheb wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 11:48 pmTaking a look at it should be smart, for sure.

Re: NCAA football 2023
Is that determined by market territory or by measure of new market share? Because US and FSU share a lot of territory, but nobody in an FSU house is watching UF games, and vice versa. The same with USC/Clemson. And with today's society, fanbases are so wonky anyway. People graduate and spread out, so, for example, I know Clemson has an oddly large following in the pacific northwest. No clue why, I've just read about it somewhere before.
