I wasn't on the board all that much during the off-season (that's baseball time), were people saying "we should tank" or were they saying "we should start Trask"?
I'd say it was a bit of both. Saying it without saying it. Unequivocal certainty that we were going to stink and should not attempt to "win" the NFC South because we were destined to just get trounced again in the Wild Card round. There was a lot of trade Mike Evans. Trade Devin White. Trade anyone of value. Don't spend any money bringing in a veteran QB to compete with Trask or depth at other positions. Etc.
I don't think saying "we should start Trask" is anything close to saying "we should tank", especially when Mayfield was the alternative. He was a second round pick who was drafted to become the eventual starter. To say they are similar is trying to push a false narrative.
Devin White is overrated. If someone wanted to pay a lot for him, I'd have traded him even if we had a good/known quantity at QB.
They didn't spend any money to bring in a veteran QB to compete with Trask. They gave a few dollars to Mayfield to start. At the time, I thought that was them tanking while pretending they weren't. At that point, yeah, I'd have suggested to trade Evans too, because it looked like they were trying to tank. So yeah, why not trade him? If they really believed in Mayfield and thought they could really win, why not give Evans the money he deserved to lock him in? They could've made the money work. Everyone does.
