Yeah what I really like about this kid is his production wasn't based on just being a foot race faster than college competition or bigger than the corners he faced. The fact he kept it up in the Senior bowl speaks volumes.
2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl: Tez Johnson, Willie Lampkin stand out despite being undersized

Tez Johnson showed off his ability to beat press coverage: The Oregon wideout consistently separated against press coverage despite weighing only 156 pounds.

“The first guy off the bus” is often used to describe a team’s most physically imposing player. In that case, Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson and North Carolina interior offensive lineman Willie Lampkin could be characterized as the last guys off the bus. And yet, they are two of the biggest standouts from 2025 Reese's Senior Bowl practices so far.

Johnson measured at 5-foot-9 and 156 pounds at the Senior Bowl. That makes him the third-lightest wide receiver prospect ever, just 1 pound heavier than Tutu Atwell and Aaron Lockett as prospects. Such a slight frame would normally hinder a wide receiver in press coverage. That’s compounded when the cornerback is one of the better press-man defenders in the 2025 NFL Draft. But Johnson thrived in that situation against Florida State’s Azareye'h Thomas, as his superb release package and route running were on full display.

It’s nothing new for Johnson, whose 91.8% separation rate since joining Oregon in 2023 places him in the 100th percentile among FBS wide receivers. When isolating his targets to single-coverage situations, Johnson’s 74.2% separation rate over the past two years ranks in the 92nd percentile.

You know, Tez is the first late round (after 5th) that I've liked in awhile. I've watch a lot of videos on him. He runs out of bounds a lot like Palmer. I don't like that. I also don't like he gives himself up if a LB is going to crush him. That said his highlights are Buckyish. He clearly can get separation. I wish him the best. I hope he makes the 53 man roster

Stepping back big picture here: I like this strategy the Bucs have employed recently of finding very productive #2 WRs from NCAA teams. I don't love the idea of allocating the 1st round to such a prospect, but for mid-late rounders, it's a solid team building concept.

I've been very vocal in my support here of Tez, but one thing that does give me pause: Bo Nix's Broncos drafted his Oregon #1 WR last year with their 4th rounder, but didn't pickup his #2 (Tez Johnson) despite having (2) 6th round picks this year.

That shouldn't concern you. The Broncos drafted a WR (Pat Bryant) in the 3rd round this year as well as Franklin last year, to go along with Sutton & Mims. They don't need him.

I remember that hype train ... college competition level was severely lacking.

This is an example of what I was referring to.
Brackins was just physically superior to his competition.

Tez Johnson Manifested “What He Wanted” Coming To The Bucs

Tez Johnson started throwing friendly jabs at his former college teammate right away when holding a press conference with the media on Friday. When asked about what it feels like coming to Tampa Bay, one of the first things it reminded him was Bucky Irving’s height.

“Like home,” Johnson said about arriving to the Bucs’ facility. “Felt like I’m going to be here for the rest of my life, I enjoyed it. I seen Bucky the first day, still short [laughs].”

It’s all love between Johnson and Irving, who will be entering his second season after a sensational, highlight-filled rookie season. Appearing on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams last week, the running back shared his thoughts about rooming with the team’s seventh-round pick at Oregon and why it took a long time for the two to gel.

“So when Tez had transferred from Troy, me and him ended up being roommates,” Irving said. “So yeah, Tez was the guy that came in. It took us a pretty good time to gel with each other because he used to try to come in the house and just talk about how good he was at Troy. And I used to tell him, ‘Yo, I don’t want to hear that. You’ve got to show me when you get out here on the field.’ And he pretty much showed me that he’s got it.”

Johnson proved that “he’s got it” with the Ducks as he was the team’s leading receiver the past two seasons while hauling in 10 touchdowns apiece both years. The two of them were a big reason why the team went 12-2 in 2023, and joining forces again could provide another spark.

There is no question Irving has blossomed into one of the better running backs in the NFL, but Johnson will get some run and have the chance to become a return specialist and factor into the offense.

It is all Johnson wanted from the start.

“Tez used to always say, like when he would be watching my games or anything like that, ‘Bro, I want to come down there with you to Tampa,” Irving added. “Like he used to just say it every time we got on the phone. I’m like, ‘Bro, just put your head down and work and God’s going to take care of everything.’ And then it happened. I guess he got what he wanted.”

Even Irving’s mom manifested it.

“His mom, our mom because I call her mom too, she always spoke it into existence,” Johnson said. “‘Son, when you come to Tampa Bay next year, we got to cook for you.’ Bucky was always like, ‘Mom, stop saying that.’ She was always like, ‘It’s going to happen.’ When it happened, she was probably the second person that called me [and she said,] ‘I told you.’ It just feels surreal.”

“I’m faster than him,” Irving said. “He’s mad about that 40 time because I told him he’d better run fast, and we pretty much clocked the same time. So I’m telling him I’m faster than him right now, so he’s pretty much mad about that.”

It is very close between the two, with Irving running a 4.55 and Johnson a 4.51 40-yard time during their respective NFL Combine performances.

“Come on man,” Johnson said when posed the question of who is faster. “Who’s faster? Me! Check the 40 time. We raced a couple of times, but he’s still going to say like, ‘You’re lighter than me.’ ‘Okay, I’m lighter.’ He’s fast, don’t get me wrong, he’s fast. He’s still going to get caught on the backend, he got to get that up when we get out here working. That’s my boy though, he knows I’m faster, I don’t really got to speak on it. He’s going to say something, when he sees this, he’s going to say something. Now y’all got us arguing now.”

Pairing Tez Johnson with Bucky Irving is bound to create some fun stories that will be shared as they continue to play together in Tampa Bay. That will come with plenty of trash talk.

It's funny ... for how much respect and humility he has, I kinda want to see more of a chip on his shoulder.

Dude is very much in his lane, looking over his shoulder with the blinker on.

The equipment guy telling him "Mike usually has both of these but for training camp he'll share it with you" bit cracked me up. Don't get too comfortable, Tez!

Maybe because there weren't enough bodies in this OTA so some guys were playing out of their normal positions.

Interesting pre-draft convo ... they predicted 4th round after running a Bucky Irving 40 yard dash time.

In the pre-draft video I posted, they said with the tracker, he was the fastest WR in the combine drills.

Seems like he didn't get elite coaching on how to get the fastest 40 time, but when it comes to football speed, he's not getting caught from behind.

Egbuka and Tez are roommates at camp. They're both learning from each other as well as from the vets. Got a dangerous WR room on this team.

Hate how these two are making me almost too comfortable in not getting Godwin back.

Either way, we're thankfully/hopefully lightyears away from having to relying on Sterling Shepard again.

Why the hate? He wasn't dominant, but he made plays for us.
