The Travis Hunter Experience

Post by Snake »

Given the hype, novelty, and draft capital given up to select him. Along the connection to our little bitch former OC. I think it’s thread worthy.
Head Coach Liam Coen’s bold plan:

Coen intends to deploy Hunter on approximately 80% of all snaps during the 2025 regular season—emphasizing his dual‑role contributions on both offense and defense.

During camp, the team structured his practice schedule meticulously—starting with exclusive focus days before gradually integrating “flip-flopping” between offense and defense in the same practice. Hunter has described the plan as “super‑organized,” appreciating the controlled ramp-up and clear expectations.

In the opener against Pittsburgh, Hunter logged snaps on both sides - 11 on offense and 8 on defense - showcasing the team’s commitment to his two-way role. Pro Football Focus graded him among the highest offensive grades among first‑round rookies. And in training camp, he continued to play both positions, reinforcing the Jaguars’ strategy.
Hunter is officially listed as a starting wide receiver on the Jaguars’ initial unofficial depth chart released early in preseason, alongside Brian Thomas Jr. and Dyami Brown.
At cornerback, he’s placed as a second-string option, backing up Tyson Campbell and possibly Jourdan Lewis, depending on the source

Can’t wait to see how it goes. Should be entertaining either way.

Bit crazy they are leaning on him more as a receiver than a CB. He's really good at both, but he's a better CB.

Of course, Jacksonville doesn't have much beyond Brian Thomas Jr unless Dyami Brown inspires confidence.

They should throw it a lot. Will have a chance to leverage his explosiveness and get him touches. Curious to see how that plays over time. As was mentioned by the film breakdown guy in my post.

I’m still holding out that he’s a better corner too. in those clips you can see how he flips his hips over. Particularly the outside hip- it’s just flawless. A more difficult position, it’ll take time.

True, ultimately I think he ends up playing more corner (if not exclusively there). His traits and tools just translate so well to the pro game. Looks smooth out there following a receiver in coverage.

Be interesting to see their offense, Coen's said he plans on a similar short/intermediate passing game like in Tampa to get the receivers in space and to do ball control via the pass. Not sure that's a good way to utilize Lawrence or Thomas Jr, but can't deny the success Coen had here with Evans running more short/intermediate than ever last season.

Over or under 2.5 years before he's full time one side?

Under.

If he ends up at DB, I see him in the *occasional* offensive package.

If he’s a WR full time, don’t know if there’s much reason play him at CB. It’s easier to feature him in offensive packages, or use him as a decoy. On defense, not so much.

I think finding someone to play WR at his level to replace him on the side of the ball will be easier than finding someone that can play DB at his level so he ends up on defense full time with the occasional offensive play thrown in within a year or two max. My opinion

Seconded.

He's a good receiver, don't get me wrong, but he's an elite defensive back. Were I his coach, I would put him at corner full-time with the occasional wide receiver snap to keep him happy.

It's not about his skillset, which is great. It's a matter of wear. If he plays five years both ways, that's the same number of snaps as a ten-year vet in half the games, with all those licks and hits that entails. That's a TON of cumulative trauma and explosive movements in a relatively short time period.

I would love to see a true full-time two-way player, but I would rather Travis Hunter be able to walk without a cane at age 35.

I bet Hunter has more offensive than defensive snaps this year, mainly because the priority for Coen is to establish a good, high functioning offense and to revive Lawrence from further slippage into the bust hole. Jax has not had an identity in years since the Saxonville days. Good offenses go much farther than good defenses do.

Ehh, being good to great at both appears to correlate with winning it all.

Jags are not winning Superbowl this year, even they know it.

Also this board seems to be pretty low on Hunter as a WR. A lot of draftniks had Hunter as the consensus best WR by a mile. He is a better prospect than MHJr was as a WR. Why are we acting like the kid is some mediocre WR prospect?

Travis Hunter was a 5 star top recruit out of HS

Plays like an all-pro, wins heisman at Boulder.

Drafted early in the 1st,

The guy seems like a standup dude and has been consistently great his whole college career. I am rooting for him.

Nonsense, brother. And I’m someone who dared voice a few doubts about MHJr’s projection.

I just think really good WRs are easier to find than really good CBs are. I have never seen the kid play either

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootba ... f-the-ball
Hunter is playing mostly on offense, being on the field for 59 percent of the Jaguars’ offensive snaps. But he has just 13 catches for 118 yards with no touchdowns and only three first downs through four games.

On defense, Hunter is doing even less, playing just 39 percent of snaps with no interceptions or other significant impact plays.

On Sunday against the 49ers, Hunter wasn’t a starter on either side of the ball. He did make his best offensive play of the season, a 28-yard catch, but he also had a fumble after one of his catches, and on defense he was very limited, getting on the field for just nine snaps in the first half and getting benched on defense in the second half.

Drafted a guy who plays 2 positions and dont know what to do with him. Sounds about Jags.

If he solely trained/played db, he'd be phenomenal

Yep. I’m committed to dying on that hill. The highest ceiling is at DB.

He needs to stick to corner until he's good enough to earn playing time as a receiver.
We're paying the price for a half-measure taken by The Union 160 years ago.

The New Union will correct that mistake.

They spent two first rounders on him, definitely seems like they’d have been better off just taking a WR and CB with those two picks. Coulda just stayed put and taken Egbuka at their spot, ouch.
