Not. At. All.
He got into the right situation at the right time. Baker Mayfield was a disaster before he got here and had a good season. Canales was then seen as some QB guru despite the fact that we had the worst run game in the league and that Baker, while decent, wasn't all-world. David Tepper thought he'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone by hiring Canales: 1 get a QB guru for Bryce Young, 2 hurt the Bucs by forcing them to have to sign another OC. He did us a favor and now Canales looks like a dead man walking.

I'm trying to speak into existence hiring Mike McDaniel when he gets axed.
We're paying the price for a half-measure taken by The Union 160 years ago.
The New Union will correct that mistake.

Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
Agreed. Ironically Baker’s reputation before Tampa has helped his OCs get hired. Everyone attributes the success to the OC instead of assuming Baker also might be a good QB. Let’s see if the same happens with Grizz.Bootz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:11 pmNot. At. All.

There are 2 step punters and there are 3 step punters
3 Step punters are told to learn the 2 step technique or face the consequences.
Small pauses are unacceptable

I am hoping Grizz can learn that. I am not willing to write him off after 4 games.Primeminister wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:04 pmGrizz just doesn’t have the feel for this.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:01 pm I had a sus feeling about Grizz all the way back when he started going on about wanting to add more vertical elements to the passing attack.
Like bro, we had blueprint for getting the most out of Baker and our offense...why try to fuck with the brew???
Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
I don’t see McDaniel and Bowles being a match. And Grizz isn’t going anywhere unless Bowles is canned anyway

Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
I think after Week 10 we know what we have with him. Has he evolved at all? The mark of a good coach is the ability to adjust. It is a crime we have near zero play action when all advanced metrics + last season success preach importance of PA. That’s on Grizz
Edit: That’s what worries me the most. I fear Grizz’s process is broken. Why go against all wisdom when you have proof it works?

I wonder if the lack of PA is due to the make shift oline we have.Primeminister wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:18 pmI think after Week 10 we know what we have with him. Has he evolved at all? They run the ball extremely well. They just dont do it as often as they should because they're always trailing.Primeminister wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:16 pmI hate his lack of a run game.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:15 pm I'm trying to speak into existence hiring Mike McDaniel when he gets axed.

NFL Research: Jalen Hurts had zero passing yards in the second half, becoming the first QB to win a game with eight or more passing attempts and zero passing yards in a second half since Panthers QB Jake Delhomme in Week 10 of the 2008 season at Oakland (0 for 9, 0 yards). They’re the only two QBs in league history to have wins in such games since at least 1991.

Who's really gonna care about that? He won his 50th career start today and if he retired right now his legacy would be he scores a ton of TDs and is 1-1 in the Superbowl with a Superbowl MVP under his belt. Better than most QBs in the history of this game could hope for.

Missed most of the game, but ST needs an overhaul today. Punter has the slowest kick I have ever seen.
Refs were letting the DBs get away with murder out there (both sides).
Bucky didn’t fumble.

It would help to have Goedeke, Mauch, and Mike … But we miss Coen dearly.
Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
I hate that there were crucial bad calls in the game.
At the same time, Baker made a fucking bonehead play on 1st down. That turnover hurt more than the officials being fucking stupid.

I don't know if he would be as good on another team, but it doesn't matter. Everything you just said is true. He scores, he plays efficient football, he has a signature play and he wins....a lot.Bootz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 6:22 pmWho's really gonna care about that? That said, I want us to get healthy and get another crack at them in January. A lot of the reasons we lost today are either correctable issues or just being shorthanded. I don't like the Eagles, so I don't want to see us dodge them. I want us to beat them in their own house, again. Preferably on the way to a Super Bowl appearance.

Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
This one hurts. I penciled in a loss, because... There's like.. zero holes on that Eagles roster. Two flubs cost the loss. The block six, and the INT.
(that wasnt a fumble)
At the end of the day, we took the defending champs down to the wire.
A lot to build upon. A lot to learn from this.
We're gonna be okay.

Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
All you need to know about Canales is that he'd start every drive with passing to guys like Ko Kieft. And infamously managed to be the only OC we've ever had that couldn't figure out how to get Chris Godwin involved with the rest of the offense. Honest to God I've never had a bigger laugh than when the Panthers decided he was their guy.Bootz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:11 pmNot. At. All.

Frustrated by another slow start, can't spot a good team 14 right out of the gate and expect to win. Special teams coach needs to realize he isn't teaching Special Education, he is coaching special teams.
As for Grizzard, he will figure it out. I don't remember Coen being as good as the start of last year as he seemed to be at the end.

Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
I was not a fan of Canales brutally vanilla, Mid-Zone heavy run game, 12 personnel-heavy, Boot & Flood off playaction, pretty conceptually simple (and predictable) in the passing game offense.
Coen’s whole offense, his check system, his ubiquitous and versatile motion and dummy action, his layering huge suites of looks and plays off of both, his tendency to break tendency, his play sequencing, his Spacing passing game stressing the defense from -2 to 18 yard from one boundary to the other with all kinds of actions to open up receivers or compromise defender leverage… Even before you get to Coen’s playcalling, scripting, sequencing (which was all very good), concept-wise it was next level in contrast to prior. And exactly how to stress modern defense. It was/is miles beyond Canales offense.
I’ve tried my best to be patient with Grizzard. He’s had ample injuries on the OL and in the WR room. But we had a cavalcade of injuries last year as well.
We’re four games in now. That is enough time to look through the tape and draw some conclusions. We’ve definitely pivoted to being McDaniels-esque in the passing game this year with a chunk of last year’s core run game along with some McDaniels though, very importantly, without all of Coens’ motion suites layered in.
We aren’t nearly as successful on 1st and 2nd down as we were last year. As importantly, last year we rarely ever saw 2 unsuccessful plays in a row. We’re seeing that at a considerably increased rate this year. That is a huge deal for myriad reasons.
At some point later this week I’m going to break down some sequences from our four games which highlights the differences and our attendant struggles.
Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
Besides the block ST did well.
Lots of return yardage and two very long fgs

Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
Canales didn’t overly impress and I was very surprised he got a HC job. But his successors did have Bucky Irving who is a huge help in the run and short pass game. And the Oline has been improving since he was here (injuries aside)
Coen is being remembered with bias around here right now. He was not a flawless offensive genius. That said, he schemed things up much more effectively in general than Grizz has managed to do so far. And I’m disappointed we seem so determined to not continue doing what worked last year, more or less. People are remembering Coen more fondly because Grizz and the offensive execution so far this season are giving them reason to do so.
I’ll continue to bitch about lack of play action because it baffles me that we don’t do it way more often with this group of offensive players. We also need to see some easy concepts and routes drawn up that help keep the offense moving. We know this offense is very capable of both. We have yet to see a gameplan be a boon for us in a game this year. Everything looks overly difficult on offense. There are multiple reasons for that, but the play calling and offensive schemes are as big as any.

a loss is a loss but this one isnt all that troublesome
Re: Not so Rapid Reactions
I'd also say this game meant a lot to the Eagles for many reasons. They pulled out all the stops in gadget plays to ensure the victory. If we get a rematch in the playoffs, I wouldn't bet against the Bucs.

I guess. I see a lot of people saying that now. But its just a niche thing to say now. It can't be proven 1 way or another and there's not even a guarantee that we'll meet again. It doesn't really mean anything. They won today. That much is a fact.
