Re: Myles Garrett
It depends on your motivations. That team was on the doorstep of a championship with aging players who's windows were closing. The right thing to have done, was rebuild after the failed repeat attempt the following year. They tried to keep things going. At the time, the trade was the right move, the approach of the organization after the fact, is what was wrong. If this team thinks they're on the door step of a championship with windows closing, then this is a move that should be made, as long as they understand that they need to cut bait with certain players after the season or next, and rebuild.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2025 4:56 pmNuked the organization for like the next 20 years almost!
1) Make the trade, and hence a run at a ring for 2025 & 2026.
2) Re-structure Mayfield's contract so we can move on from him after 2026.
3) Give Evans an extension to cover 2026 and then prepare to let him walk after that season.
4) Draft a QB in R3 or 4 this year that you think can take over in 2027.
This team has some young talent that is signed through and beyond the next 2 seasons with Wirfs, Winfield, and hopefully... McMillan, Irving, Kancy & Diaby. If the team stinks in 2027, then we trade the best players... possibly Wirfs and Winfield and start over.
This is what would need to happen. If people are ok with that, then so be it.

If that's all it took to get this done and we DIDNT pull the trigger, I'd have to consider finding a new team to follow.

Update!!!
Re: Myles Garrett
The Chiefs will not give up two 1sts. Veach values draft picks too much to do that. That, plus the Chiefs' cap situation, plus DE just isn't a top-3 need, while KC has critical needs at LB, DB, OT (not in that order) probably make KC a distant contender for Myles.

Re: Myles Garrett
I could see every team there giving up 2 1sts. 49ers might have some hesitation if they have questions about QB. But as long as you have that solved you can make moves like this.

That’s why two firsts plus White in the last year of his deal won’t be enough.
I think we’d all pull that trigger.

Re: Myles Garrett
Yeah they could but who else looks at their roster and says: "this is the puzzle piece we've been missing to get us over the top"?
We're in that convo, maybe the Bills ... not sure who else.

Out of that list though only the Cowboys and 49ers have earlier 2025 picks and neither of them can really afford Garrett. Not that we necessarily can but we’re in a better cap situation going into 2026 with Dallas needing to sign Parsons and SF needing to sign Purdy.

Re: Myles Garrett
As bad as their defense is, their offense definitely needs a boost. Amari Cooper was a non factor for them. Guys like Hollis and Shakir and Kincaid and Knox are supplemental types. None of them shoupd be featured guys. They should be going after guys like Higgins or Godwin.

Re: Myles Garrett
Two firsts and some change is a no brainer. Of those teams we have the best draft pick this year other than the Cowboys who I don’t see prioritizing Garrett when they have Parsons.

Parsons plays a different position.
Garrett would be a replacement for Demarcus Lawrence in Dallas. Hes older now and injuries have taken a toll.

Re: Myles Garrett
The Eagles probably have the most to offer. They have a lot of young talent that isn't in need of an extension nor replacement any time soon. They're already committed to kicking the can down the road with a lot of players that are in that position, and pushing it further doesn't hurt them. Giving up 2 firsts and other picks wouldn't be hard for them. I would put them as the odds on favorite to get a deal done. I think they could offer more than any other team.

Re: Myles Garrett
The Vikings could also probably put together a package that entices the Browns a lot as well. McCarthy, Van Ginkel, and #1 could be something they like. McCarthy gives that a cheap QB that allows them to use their #2 pick on a different position or even trading down. With Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah's injury, they could seriously use a good LB. Van Ginkel has this year, at $10M, left on his deal... they could extend him and assure themselves of a replacement. No, he's not young, but about as old as Garrett... about 8 months??? Anyway, a 2 or 3 year extension could work. Then, another 1st to boot, is probably a deal that no one could match.
Of course, that would depend on what the Browns think of McCarthy and the QB's in the draft.

Re: Myles Garrett
That trade makes zero sense for Minnesota. Who's playing QB? Darnold again? Yea I think that ship sailed. Plus why give up a QB, a 1st, AND a pass rusher?CannonFire wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 3:19 pm The Vikings could also probably put together a package that entices the Browns a lot as well. Oh, my bad. I'm in baseball season mode. I didn't see where the Vikings said they weren't bringing back Darnold and announced McCarthy as the Day 1 starter.Bootz wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 3:30 pmThat trade makes zero sense for Minnesota. McCarthy alone is already too much for Garrett. He’d bring back more in a trade than MG would.

Re: Myles Garrett
Maybe. I'm not as high on him. I think his value is what he was drafted at, 1 first round pick. That said, if you're right on what it would take... then that should be a no-brainer for both teams and get done today.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 4:24 pm McCarthy alone is already too much for Garrett. We’ll never know in this particular hypothetical, but the history of the NFL since just about forever says the QB is kind of much much more valuable.
If they were both traded this off-season McCarthy’s return would be higher in my opinion.

"Two first round picks" is getting thrown around a lot with MG. I don't really know? I can't remember a veteran player being traded for that much draft capital that wasn't a QB. So, we'll see if he goes for that and how much. However, if he is traded for that those are likely to be late first round picks as he wants to go to a contender. So, a second half of the first 2025 pick and then likely even later pick in 2026. Plus maybe a throw in player or later round pick?
I think if Minnesota called the NY Giants today and said we're going to re-sign Sam and want to trade JJ they'd be able to get the #3 overall plus more because it's a QB on a rookie contract and they won't have a shot at Cam or Shadeur unless they trade up.
Is #3+ more valuable than a couple late firsts+? The trade chart says it is. #3 is 2,200. #19 is 875. Let's say Garrett gets us to the NFC Championship game. The 29th pick is 640, and you discount a bit for a future pick. Total value only ~1,500 or so.
If you say no way the Giants do that then maybe the Jets would at #7? Value of that pick is 1,500 so about even. Depends on the sweeteners...
Re: Myles Garrett
I mean...that math maths, but I think you're over-valuing JJ. He was the 5th QB taken in his own draft just 10 months ago and has not taken a single snap in the NFL to "boost" his value. I disagree that the Giants would trade third overall for him. If they thought that highly of him, they could have taken him last year at 6th overall with their own pick, even with DJ on their roster (everyone and their mother knew Jones was/is trash).Grahamburn wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2025 7:41 amNo problem. If there was a year to get overvalued (JJ's that is) it'd be this year because it is a historically bad projected QB draft class. Even then, I still don't see a team giving up more than a single first round pick for McCarthy.

Re: Myles Garrett
5th QB taken last year doesn't mean all that much. He's more valuable than the top 2 coming out this year if you believe current prospect ratings. These top 10 teams that need a QB would certainly trade their pick for him I think. Maybe not the top 2, but if you're outside of that it would be considered for sure.
Anyway, just showing the value.
I'm still dubious MG is traded at all.
