I guess the Bucs and Godwin himself feel he is a #2.

It's a theory.... maybe more of a hypothesis.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 9:50 pmEvans should take what he's learned from Godwin here and get as much as you can and wait out the market.whistlepig777 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 9:47 pm And with that fat ass contract, Chris Godwin will take what he learned from Evans and restructure that into one fat paycheck at the start of every season for years and years.
It seems like Evans restructures every year in such a way as to get the bulk of his money as a giant bonus up front before the season starts and keeps the gravy train running year after year.
I should look into this. Only noticed it last year.

Re: Chris Godwin Thread
I'm interested to see the structure of the deal. Mike Williams got the exact same deal last week(they share the same agent). His cap# this year is $14mil. I would imagine Godwin's is much less than that but it would also mean his subsequent cap years are very large.

Re: Chris Godwin Thread
Schefter said cap hit is $5mil this year.
Godwin clearly didn't want to play for the Bucs this year, next year or the year after. It is obvious.

I'm interested in this structure. If we brought Godwin's cap# down from $19.2mil, he likely got a large bonus up front anyway and has large cap figures the next 2 years.

And if I'm right, he'll parlay that into restructures and extensions until the cows come home.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:02 pmI recall him doing it once or twice. But perhaps he does.whistlepig777 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 9:59 pm

This could end up a 5 or 6 year deal in effect.
If I'm right and I'm probably not.

Licht and Spytek just destroyed every front office in the league.

NFL math!!
We'll keep kicking the can down the road so the effect of these moves is spread over a decade.

Sign em. We need actualized grown men on this d-line. Skill and quickness can contribute immediately on offense if we fit them in right

You're just going to have to explain to me how signing a top free agent while only taking a small cap hit is something that routinely happens in the league.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:33 pmYea, I forget sometimes how reality is too much to handle for some of you.
I'm spitballing here so I won't die on this hill.

Basically every Tom Brady contract in New England over his last 10 years there. Desean Jackson signed a similar deal with the Washington Team a few years back. Drew Brees last contract with the Saints. JJ Watt's contract with Arizona last year.whistlepig777 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:38 pmYou're just going to have to explain to me how signing a top free agent while only taking a small cap hit is something that routinely happens in the league.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:33 pm

Again, this isn't anything new but fans are finally paying attention. Like I said, reality is hard for some.

Very happy they got this worked out. It will be interesting to see who else they prioritize.

Cards paid him $14.5 with only 4.9 hitting the cap last year.
This year he gets $13.5 with a $15.9 cap hit
7.2 in dead money for 2024.
Interesting.
Re: Chris Godwin Thread
Things have certainly changed. Dead money used to be viewed as the real Satan.

Re: Chris Godwin Thread
Precisely how voidable years work. Spreads out the burden of a contract. The downside is large dead cap hits after the players deal is up. Like we currently have for Suh & Gronk despite neither being under contract.whistlepig777 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:53 pmI pulled up Watt's deal since it was the most recent.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:42 pm

Re: Chris Godwin Thread
The contracts for rookies are set through the league office. This is a bit disingenuous as the only thing the rookie and FO are negotiating is any signing bonuses if they want more up front a la Joey Boss. Maybe some language.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 10:30 pmSounds about right.
What I'm more amazed at is fans thinking this is somehow different or groundbreaking salary cap practices. It's basically how all 1st round rookie deals have been since 2011 and how any contract with a signing bonus is.

Re: Chris Godwin Thread
It's amazing that this use to be a franchise that prided itself on having as minimal dead cap money or singing bonuses as possible.
Now we basically hand out both for every contract signed.

Yes but the groundwork is there already. That's basically the foundation of all rookie 1st down deals.kaimaru wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 11:00 pmThe contracts for rookies are set through the league office. Re: Chris Godwin Thread
Well, after the Super Bowl, Licht went to Glazers if they could employ these kinds of contracts. I am guessing he was told back when hired that they didn't want big signing bonuses due to possible dead money. I think they probably look at this is getting their moneys worth last year and this year. Will this continue? Until we suck, yes. After? Who knows.
Re: Chris Godwin Thread
I understand how rookie contracts are structured. I'm just not seeing how voidable years contracts like Godwin are similar.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 11:03 pmYes but the groundwork is there already. That's basically the foundation of all rookie 1st down deals.

Re: Chris Godwin Thread
The voidable years obviously aren't part of the rookie contract equation. But the large signing bonuses combined with tiny base salaries make for smaller cap hits year to year on rookie deals.kaimaru wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 11:12 pmI understand how rookie contracts are structured.
