I think you're going to see a lot more of this in the coming years.... guys retiring with gas still left in the tank. Barry Sanders and Calvin "Megatron" Johnson were the first to do it.

But can't be too mad, what else could a fan ask for? Thank the Man and wish him well.

As an aside Pedro went Full Lugz when this nobody from a nobody school donned #74 (same with Greene or whatever his name was) Yeah, my dude wasn't Gruber but served the legacy well.

Fine if don't retire #74 for a while buy feel free to shelf it.

Guy’s don’t have to play long time to be paid.

Ali was a D3 guy… bet those who recruited him feel like god’s now.

Yes and no. I think Cappa, especially, can get more on the market than he's truly worth. We need to fill holes, but we don't need to overpay to fill holes.

Never overpay to fill those holes. Negotiate a fair rate.

At least that’s what @PeterGuptill told me.

Cappa is your typical blue collar lineman. Gritty and hard working and gets the job done but not flashy or superstar-ish. I'm sure he can be re-signed for a reasonable rate.

While Marpet retiring is not great for the team moving forward, freeing up his salary does wonders for our cap space.

For example, Marpet's average salary per year would pay at least half the cost of keeping Chris Godwin. Not a horrible thing, all in all.

It's a sliver lining to be sure. We're going to most likely pay Cappa now (less than $10 Mil APY for sure)...hope Hainsey steps up...and probably add a mediocre vet to one of of those spots.

Sanders and Johnson both retired because they were tired of the losing culture in Detroit. They have both said it openly.

I hadn't considered the ramifications of losing Marpet's salary. All in all, I'd rather he stayed but I guess that's a silver lining.

Would have preferred he had called it a day, or even joined his Bucs TV show partner in checking out. Best of luck in the future to one of our better anchors, Mr. Marpet.

I don't know. I think Evans, Godwin, and David are probably higher. Vea and possibly White as well. Wirfs and Winfield are up there too. I'd definitely say there's an argument that could be made for him though.

Considering he was from a D3 school I think it has to be a top 3 pick. D3 to Pro Bowl is an impressive selection.

Yeah, you can't compare him to someone like Wirfs who was supposed to be good. Not un-humanly good, mind you, but good. When selected, Ali was a complete unknown to 98% of the fan base.

Exactly. If Devin White becomes a regular pro bowler it would meet expectations of a top 5 pick. Ali Marpet was out of nowhere and became our best OL not named Wirfs.

That's right. Thanks. For some reason I was thinking David was the year before Evans and that was Licht's first year. Evans was his first pick.

Meh. I expect a 2nd round draft pick... regardless of what school he went to, should be expected to go to a Pro Bowl.

Calvin Johnson specifically cited his terrible back, knees, and ankles as why he retired. He has come out and spoken about concussions he suffered but that was ~3 years after his retirement.

Calvin Johnson, I am sure that was part of it. He claimed a couple of years ago in SI that he actually quit because he estimated he had 9 concussions and his body was in constant pain.

As far as Barry Sanders was because William Ford didn't have a desire to win a Super Bowl. In his book he stated that the owners knew if they could win 10-11 games and get into the playoffs that the stadium would be filled up every week. Ford thought winning a Super Bowl would cost too much in player salaries, so it was never his desire to win one.
