You're the one talking about him being your food.
Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
This is sad.
Great signing, now we don’t have to be obvious about who we want in the draft and if a receiver falls to us, we can use it luxury wise.

We never are. It's literally the part I like most of Licht GM style. You fill your needs in FA, you take BPA in the draft.
Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
He's impressed me when I've watched the Falcons. Very hard to cover on intermediate routes. Sharp cuts, good hands. He's not going to run by safeties but that's not why he's here. He should see the lionshare of those absent AB touches, and he'll help Godwin ease back in.
Getting him for 3-30 in this market is value. It also puts us in a great position if we like a receiver in the draft but think he needs some seasoning.

The more I think about this the more I don’t like it. Couldn’t we have found a ring chaser for this role who’d have been cheap??
Gage is a good player but this means Godwin isn’t staying beyond this year.

What's not to like? He's good, young, and 10 million per year is not expensive...real bucs fan wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:34 pm The more I think about this the more I don’t like it. Couldn’t we have found a ring chaser for this role who’d have been cheap??

A ring chaser for cheap would have likely been someone worse who was once good.

Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
Right? I don't see why any criticism is warranted. We got a really good deal on a WR who was one of the best in the NFL for the final 8 games, runs god routes, has good hands, and runs the full route tree. Plus he's young and is getting better.

I think the fact that he's been tagged twice is an indication that someone doesn't want to commit long-term. Whether it's the Bucs or CG is a guess at this point.Primeminister wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:45 pmWhy exactly can’t Godwin stay beyond this year?real bucs fan wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:34 pm The more I think about this the more I don’t like it. We had a ring chaser for cheap last year and he had mental breakdown late in the year which helped torpedo our chances of repeating.real bucs fan wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:34 pm The more I think about this the more I don’t like it. Godwin injury
AB meltdown
Wirfs injury
Any one of those not happening might have provided that winning edge vs the Rams in the playoffs

It's true, but the Gage contract doesn't impact him...unless Gage is just lights out this year.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:50 pmI think the fact that he's been tagged twice is an indication that someone doesn't want to commit long-term. I get the contractual reasoning although I disagree. I’m referring to the belief that signing Gage means Godwin is gone. I disagree.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:50 pmI think the fact that he's been tagged twice is an indication that someone doesn't want to commit long-term. And if not a ring chaser, how about the first rounder? And then use the money to sign Lenny?
We’ll see, and I do hope I’m wrong.

Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
Plus the cap jumped up 26 million this year and is expected to jump up again next year. Some think it could exceed $225 million next year.
We are going to start seeing ridiculous contracts.
Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
A cap inflating at this rate + contract chicanery will permit almost perpetual can kicking. And if it gets untenable after a years, you just eat it for a single season and reset.

Ask yourself this. If we had signed Godwin to a long term deal, you think Gage is signed long term as well? I'm inclined to say no.uscbucsfan wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:54 pmIt's true, but the Gage contract doesn't impact him...unless Gage is just lights out this year.King Bootz wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 5:50 pm

I think we wanted an AB replacement, plus Godwin may not be ready at the beginning of the season.
Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
Yes, we are going to START seeing that next year, or possibly the year after that. That's when it will start.

I thought he’d get 22.5 or something, so happy with the Godwin deal.
Thought Gage meant the end of Godwin, but guess I was wrong. Our WR depth is insane. I thought Grayson was going to be a big piece going forward but he’s like our 4th or 5th guy lol

6th rounder, meh.
Ohh wait, he's somebody now - lets give him 30 mil.
No problem with the guy, just pointing out - yes they are there, even that far down in the draft.
It highlights the word value...

Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
So Brady WANTED Gage, as part of his ‘How to get the Bucs back to the Big Dance’ list.
Hmmmm…
Hmmmm…
Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
As great as Evans, Godwin, and Gronky all are, none are shifty athletes who get in and out of their breaks quickly.
Brady's kryptonite throughout his career is defenses who rush 4 and play press man under w/ 2 high split safeties to take away anything deep. It takes a great front 4 and skilled CBs to be effective but that's exactly how the Saints give us trouble.
The best way to beat that defense is a QB who can run (which Brady can't) or shifty receivers running crossers and other man beaters, which AB, and now Gage excel at. Running the ball well so they can't play 2 high safeties helps also.
Point is, the Bucs offense needed that shifty WR Brady has always used to exploit defenses underneath like he's done with Welker, Edelman, AB.
There is a reason Brady proactively reached out to Gage

Re: Welcome WR Russell Gage
The playoffs were a huge eye opener. I think Brady got sacked more in a 2 game span than he ever had as a Buc. And while most of that could be attributed to Wirfs being out, he didn't have that guy that could get open quickly in a phone booth. Gage can do that and he has good hands.
