If the Dude was a third round pick instead of #1 overall, nobody is bothering to play this game with him. He's in a clown car with guys like Drew Lock and Jacoby Brissett.Buc2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 12:49 pmAnd that WILL happen, you know...if he fails here, some team will think exactly that and sign him. And if he fails here, should the next team say, "The Buccaneers situation sucked, it's not his fault." Like, if you were a fan of that team, how would you feel about that? How long do we play, "Things weren't perfect for Baker so how could he be expected to succeed?"

Re: 2023 Countdown to Kickoff Thread
@MJW If he was a 3rd round pick, he would traits worse than Trask and unless he was in Washington or SF, would not even get a shot. That is just as disingenuous when Brady being washed up in NE was. Also, it's an exception to the rule to say people small like Aaron Donald can make it as a DT. When you have 20 examples in the last 25 years it's no longer and exception but an anomaly. So it's not likely to happen, but certainly does. I get you think Mayfield (even though there was a posted video of Mayfield clearly seeing his first target was going to be a pick and pulled it back and making the correct read) will every be better. That's fine. We will see soon enough
I get you have to shit on every thread about how many stupid choices that FO and coaches are making, so at least you can add Evans as you will probably complain about any option. Paid him? That's crazy, he's too old for that money! They traded him? A ROH member and future HOF? Let him walk and get at best a 5th round pick? Why didn't they trade him when we could get something. I'm just saying at this point I think most on this board thinks you're yelling at clouds

For the upteenth time, I don't begrudge you your optimism. I'm just not going to pretend it's based on anything but "sometimes weird things happen" which is basically what you're saying here.kaimaru wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 7:27 pm @MJW If he was a 3rd round pick, he would traits worse than Trask and unless he was in Washington or SF, would not even get a shot. As for my negativity, I put actual money on the Bucs to win the chip more years than not. I'm sorry if me yelling at clouds is making it harder for you to pretend the piss on your head is rain.

Also, dude has been in the league for long enough now that if you're still using "skill set" as a reason for optimism, good luck with that. Fucking Tim Tebow and JaMarcus Russell had elite traits too. Talking about skill set is the same thing as talking about college career. After a half-decade and a ton of starts/snaps, it gets sad.

I hope that wasn't to me, because I am not talking about anyone's skillset. He clearly seems like his personality has changed, and he clearly is trying to avoid pics in the preseason games. That gives me hope until he turns in to short JameisMJW wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 8:24 pm Also, dude has been in the league for long enough now that if you're still using "skill set" as a reason for optimism, good luck with that. I think the plan "is" to remain competitive while we, as long as we still have a competitive roster. If it wasn't for dead cap space maybe it is Garoppollo instead. Which I would have been fine with too.MJW wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 5:04 pmI can name ten guys who "were what we thought they were" for every "terrible quarterback becomes an okay quarterback" story you can.Central_Buc wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 7:38 pm
If as a fan of 35+ years (for me 31) you would remember guys like (not in any particular order) Rodney Peete, Scott Mitchell, Eric Kramer, Koy and Ty Detmer, Trent Dilfer, Guy Hebert, Mark Rypien, Mark Brunelle, Steve Beuerlien, Jake Delhomme, Doug Flutie, Neil O'Donnell, Vinny T, Dave Krieg, Stan Humphries.
There are a ton more examples over the years but the point here is most guys here listed at least (and in my memory) led their teams to the playoffs and a playoff victory, in atleast 1 season, some more than others. They are not franchise guys but are in my mind good. Two on this list went on to win a SB or 2 as a starting QB.
I could definitely see Baker on this list and still think he has potential to be more than some or most on this list. It would be hard to say right now with a questionable running game but having Evans and Godwin (fingers cross they stay healthy) could maybe see a version of Flutie and Mark Rypien in Baker. Now I'm not saying he'll go out and win SB's like Mark but to have a good year? Lead us to multiple playoffs? Absolutely.
You remember when no one knew who Kurt Warner was prior to 99, teams gave up on him or never gave him a chance. Grocery store, Had to do stints in NFL Europe and Arena football.
Jeff George was another one, only when he got to Atlanta. I don't recall him ever in the playoffs with the Falcons but man, I always thought he was a hell of a QB.. Especially when he had Emmanuel, Rison and Mathis to throw to.
Exceptions to Rules are not a plan.

If you think Baker is in the same category as Tebow and Russell, you should be in for a surprise.MJW wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 8:24 pm Also, dude has been in the league for long enough now that if you're still using "skill set" as a reason for optimism, good luck with that. The Garcia era, aka late stage Gruden, was weird as hell. Anybody remember that 2008 team that had Garcia handing off the Warrick Dunn and throwing to Ike Hillard?

I drank the Kool aid.
In another universe where 2010 wasn't a fluke, this season would be year 14 of the Josh Freeman era. He's the same age as Kirk Cousins, 35 years old.

The Bucs have had a lot of embarrassing moments. But, by far, the most embarrassing moment was when, on the first possession of the first game, Freeman caused a delay of penalty, had to call timeout to prevent a delay of game, and then after the TO got called for another delay of game.

Jameis Winston's pick sixes on both the first and last passes of his career as a Buc. Book-ended embarrassing perfection.GreatTimes wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 12:32 pm The Bucs have had a lot of embarrassing moments.
