Some thoughts on what this team could use in the offseason.

-Interior OL goes without saying

-The DL could use talent too. Problem is, we’ve spent our top pick on it three years in a row now.

-WR3 is an underrated need. Russell Gage was a failure of a signing and should be gone and I don’t buy Trey Palmer in the role.

-We could use some playmakers on defense. Davis/Dean both have stone hands so it’s all on AWJ to get turnovers. Need someone else capable of making a splash play.

-RB depth is a must. White stepped up, but Edmonds is a FA and seemed like a one and done type of guy. Vaughn is gone and Sean Tucker went from potential steal to “Who?” super fast.

It also says the Patriots are the #1 best drafting team? That goes against everything we see on the field. I’m not sure about these rankings

This is a very good list of immediate needs for this team. Only thing I'd even debate is WR3. I'm convinced we need to be looking for a WR2. Godwin has not been that guy since his knee injury. He got to 1000, good for him. But he's not reliable in critical situations and often times disappears for very long stretches. Plus he's in the final year of his deal.

I'd honestly try to swing a trade for him with a WR needy team.

I wonder what the film shows on him. It seemed to me a lot of times, in crucial moments, he’s appeared open, but the ball went another way (for better or worse… like on the final throw Sun).

I wouldn’t hate this, but I don’t see Licht doing this. But how good he is long term is a question and it’s wild we are asking this about him before Evans despite being drafted 3 years later.

There exists a reality where Canales is hired as a HC, Baker signs elsewhere, Mike Evans leaves, and LVD retires.

I really hope we're not living in that reality.

Safety and ILB are both huge needs as well. We could possibly have 2 new starting ILB next year.

Right. You’re also you know allowed to use these little things called instincts, if you have them, when no threats cross your face or enter your zone. Get some depth. Don’t make it so easy for Goff to get the ball over your head.

Oh well. That play was a microcosm of his career here. Seen it too many times.

So don't stick to your assignment, don't do your job, abandon fundamentals and go play hero ball.

So pretty much do exactly what he's been doing that has lead to him being in everyone's crosshairs.

I don't have an issue with the tweet at all, but White was bad this season, in a prove it year after demanding to be paid the most money for all LBs in the NFL. He was relegated to a specialist in our most important games of the season. He's as good as gone.

The irony is DWs replacement played his worst game of the year and was routinely picked on by the Lions offense. That 4th &1 TD happened because Britt vacated his gap unnecessarily.

In regards to the tweet, that's what fans do when they want a narrative to stick. They'll talk about a Phantom idea that DW gave up a TD but not AWJ being juked on a long TD run by a RB.

No argument here. And I think I can safely say I'm the biggest Devin White fanboy on here.

It's such a heartbreaking shame because this defense is primed, and I mean PRIMED to be absolutely great. It just needs that one super star catalyst in the middle to be the point of the spear.

White showed flashes of being that guy at times which was great, especially since the best flashes happened during one of the most important stretches in our franchises history. But he was not able to make the leap from "who he has shown he can be" into "who he actually is". And at the end of the day you just can't pay full time money to a part time player.

While this understandably frustrated White, it was just as equally frustrating for us. But nothing forces a player to finally blossom like a contract year. I think that was OBP hope, I know it was mine. For him to finally be the peak of what you can be. That kind of guy what was winning weekly DPOW awards. Be so good that it forces us to use the franchise tag on you and think of it a bargain. That didn't happen. On the contrary White played extra conservative and reserve, clearly looking to preserve his health at all costs before what would likely be best payday of his life (so long as he didn't tear anything).

He picked a payday floor instead of a ceiling. And that's fine. As a selfish fan, I hated it of course, I want every player to put it all on the line every play to bring me another chip, regardless of what it means for them, their families, or livelihoods. I also want players to take home town discounts and stay in Tampa for life. But in the end of the day we don't always get what we want. Luckily we did absolutely get what we needed though and that can never be soured.

What? Who said anything of the sort? Play your assignment. If there are no threats in your zone then go help somewhere else. Get some depth so the ball can't fit in a window behind you.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/393 ... -touchdown

Watch the play. Devin White puts a hand on St. Brown as he runs by to the outside and then does nothing else but stand there flat footed staring at the QB who is NO threat to run. Maybe it's his responsibility to just stand there doing nothing, but I doubt it? There's no RB coming out of the backfield. His threats are those 3 WRs on his side of the field. Once Brown releases outside he should be shading deeper and inside to cover the middle of the end zone. He's standing there covering nothing. Like I said. No instincts for play design or who is a threat to him and that's why he's gone.

You literally contradicted yourself in the same post. You say "play your assignment" then suggest that DW should've stop playing his assignment. You wouldn't have a LB vacate his zone.

And in that regard its a zone. Casual fans view it as a wall. It's not, it's moreso a net. There are going to be holes in any zone that force the offense to find them.

In looking at that play, it's likely whoever the safety was got way too wide in their coverage. You wouldn't need to get that wide with A: the corner also playing in that zone and B: the sideline being there also.

BUT because fans have an agenda, we know who they'll point fingers at 1st.

I contradicted nothing, but I also admittedly don't know his assignment. I assume it isn't to stand there at the goal-line when there is no RB coming out and the QB doesn't run. Yeah, I point my finger at the defender covering nobody.

I see what everyone has been discussing so here's my take on all of them:

Wirfs/AWJ- Lock them into long term deals (within reason) and do it now. They are guys who can keep you above water for the next 6-7 years if they stay healthy

Evans- Give him one final contract, but frontload it so that if his play declines later on, you can let him go without a big cap hit.

Gage- Walking papers. Motherfucker robbed us of $20 million.

White- Let him walk. Every splash play he makes is followed by three face palming ones.

LVD- Sign him to a similar deal as what he currently has. He can stay as long as he can play at a high level. He's earned it.

Mayfield- I'd bring him back for at least another two years on a prove it deal. But if and only if... (see below)

Canales- If he goes to the Panthers, all bets are off. At that point, it's time to blow up the offense. Hold onto Wirfs, Otton, Mauch, White, and Goedeke. Everyone else is expendable.

Huh? There are 4 coverage defenders on that side of the field. Winfield, Izien, Davis, and White. There are 3 receivers. All on the short side of the formation. Winfield switches immediately to go down to cover St. Brown. Davis is 1 on 1 with his man on a fade and has him locked up. Izien is lined up on Reynolds who scores the TD at the back of the end zone, but he didn't trail him until way late after the ball is thrown.

Devin shades to his right, but stands flat footed and gets NO DEPTH and the ball goes right over his head for the score.

So, I'll ask you. Who do you think screwed up? Winfield who switched and chased St. Brown immediately, Izien who stayed in his zone to cover the two receiving threats in the area, or White who covered astroturf?

I pretty much said the same thing in the Gameday thread...that DW screwed up by not backing into the back half of HIS zone to cutoff the passing lane to the back of the end zone. Bootz argued with me there, too. I didn't argue back. Why? Certainly not because I thought he was right and I was wrong. It was because I've learned over my many years on this earth not to argue with people like him because it's just not worth the time when it accomplishes nothing.

Re: The OFFICIAL 2024 Bucs off-season thread

Without having eyes on the back of his head, there was nothing that White coulda done differently there. Did the defense get its zone dissected, yes. Was it his fault, no. Goff made a good play/read and fired it into the hole, and every zone has holes.

I'm not mad at Devin for that. I'm not mad at him for anything, really, just disappointed that things didn't work out. I'm sure he's disappointed too. I wish him luck on his new team next season.

That responsibility wouldn't happen in that defense. It was a cherry picked critism and an incorrect one.
I'm not going to pretend to know what everyone's responsibility is, but I can speculate on what it was based on what they did. The entire point of my original post discussing this play is that Devin White, even if he did exactly what he was supposed to do in that situation, was unable to use his instincts to realize there is no RB for him to cover, the QB is not a threat to run, and with no receiving threat crossing his face immediately he should have instinctually known to get depth immediately after passing off Brown to make that throw much more difficult for Goff. Because, a good LBer would know that one of those receiving threats is behind him simply because they aren't in front of him. LaVonte David would know.

White just stood there waiting to tweet that we dumbass fans don't know what the super special defense was.

Another guy who needs to be let go is Ryan Neal. His tacking angles are horrendous. He got faked out of his skin time and again in the Lions game.

Again, there's not a ton Devin White can do there. If you're in a hook zone and there's crossers behind you, getting more depth isn't the answer, especially at the goal line because there's only so much depth you can get. All you can do is stick to your zone, read the QBs eyes as best you can, and play football. The crossers behind you are going to get open no matter what you do; even if you correctly shade to their side you may cover from for a moment, but because you are square to the line of scrimmage and they are not, they WILL create horizontal space eventually. All you can do is make a break on the ball when it's thrown or hope for an errant pass.

Devin White fucks up in coverage all the time. Not on this TD though. It was a hard assignment and the Lions made a play. Could LVD have made the play, maybe because he wouldn't have been as flat footed I suppose, but again this is a hard concept to cover with that coverage. A smart and unhurried QB and WR running crossers complete this ball against this coverage the majority of the time.
