Not for the Bucs (yet). But everyone else.

With the number of suspected 1st round QBs coming out, it makes this interesting.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Before the season everyone had Houston (oddly IMO) pegged as the team likely to finish with the worst record, giving Arizona the #1 pick. No one saw Carolina (again oddly) as being up for the pick. But if you think about it they didn't add as much as they gave away.
Now let's say Chicago again winds up with the #1 pick. Do they pull the trigger and say goodbye to Fields or do they continue building around him?

New England picking top 5 would be spicy. Imagine them taking a dude like Sanders.

Can’t see any team passing on Williams, but it’s fun to think about Chicago having the #1-#2 and then trading both of them.Bootz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 1:33 pm Before the season everyone had Houston (oddly IMO) pegged as the team likely to finish with the worst record, giving Arizona the #1 pick. I honestly think those types of deals are franchise crippling for the team moving up. They rarely work out. With the way Baker looks… Sign him.Bootz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 3:06 pmI wonder if OBP would be compelled to make an offer.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 2:58 pm

In this particular hypothetical let’s say Chicago has #1 and #2. The amount of picks they could acquire IF they kept Fields and built around him would be truly franchise changing draft capital.
Trade one of them to Arizona for both firsts. Multiple firsts for the other. They could overhaul a quarter of their roster almost overnight.

Ultimately I think they’d just draft Caleb. Draft MH Jr., and then trade Fields. Because likely all their coaches and front office personnel are getting canned.

I think I had either Arizona or Houston as the last team to win, thought Carolinas defense would keep them out of that race. Wrong, lolBootz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 1:33 pm Before the season everyone had Houston (oddly IMO) pegged as the team likely to finish with the worst record, giving Arizona the #1 pick. As for what Chicago should do if they end up picking #1? Depends on what Fields shows through the end of this year but I think he's gonna have to show a lot
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Good pojnts. I think they are franchise crippling if you don't have an infrastructure in place to withstand a potential bust OR the QB you select pans out. We see what the Niners did to get Trey Lance and they are in contention best team in football. And of course the Chiefs taking Mahomes has worked out so well no one even knows who was selected with the Chiefs 2018 1st they didn't own.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 5:50 pmI honestly think those types of deals are franchise crippling for the team moving up. This all would come with the Bucs believing they are a strong enough overall team to make a move for a potential franchise guy. I honestly don't believe Baker can be the guy long term. These 1st 4 games have been good. But he's had stretches like this before. So we'll see.

2024 1st, 2nd
2025 1st, 2nd
Vita Vea
For Caleb
Does that cover it? Or do we just lack the ammo

Not sure Vea would have much trade value at that point. He's got a ton of miles on him and lengthy injury history.

If I were Chicago and has the first two overall picks, I'd trade the first overall for a king's ransom and maybe the second overall pick as well, though Marvin Harrison Jr to pair with DJ Moore and help out Justin Fields would be mighty tempting.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
That’s serious brass balls right there. To pass on Williams, who could be coming off his second Heisman.Cheb wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 11:22 pmSeconded.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 5:50 pm

Justin Fields has a couple more months to take the next step and make this interesting.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
If Chicago ends up with a top 2 pick themselves that means another terrible record. I'd think they would have a new FO and coaching staff in place to make those decisions.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
I like Justin Fields, and I would like him even more if he had his fellow Buckeye Marvin Harrison Jr to be DJ Moore's new best friend out wide.
As far as Caleb Williams is concerned, I think that the bidding for that first overall pick should the Bears be willing to sell it would be astronomical. Multiple firsts and seconds for what, three years maybe, plus a juicy starter or two to sweeten the pot? Sign me up.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
How serious do you think Williams is about staying in college if he thinks hes in danger of being drafted by a team he doesnt like?
I would think thats gotta hurt the stock of the #1 pick because you still might not get the player you traded a kings ransom for.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
There's a deadline for underclassmen declaring for the draft. We'll know well before the playoffs are over whether or not Caleb Williams decides to declare or stay in school or not.Obsolete wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 1:28 am How serious do you think Williams is about staying in college if he thinks hes in danger of being drafted by a team he doesnt like?

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
If CHI ends up with the first pick agin next season, and it’s their own, Fields would have “led” the. To two straight number one overall picks. That’s not something you build around (Fields) that’s something you run away from as fast as you possibly can.
Imagine a TB QB was in his third season and we had the number one overall pick two straight years… nobody would be saying, “he needs more time.”

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Yeah, if the Bears finish with a bad enough record to end up with the #1 pick, Fields and Eberfluss (alongside the Poles regime) are out of there.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
I don’t think it’s serious. I think at best we could be looking at an Eli situation.Obsolete wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 1:28 am How serious do you think Williams is about staying in college if he thinks hes in danger of being drafted by a team he doesnt like?

Mahomes. Josh Allen. Those weren’t moves up to #1 though. These deals to get the first overall are costing 3 1sts+Bootz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 7:55 pmGood pojnts. And now we’re talking about Caleb Williams. Who, apparently, is the second coming of football QB Jesus. It’s at least 3 1sts and then some.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
If you have too 2 picks, you draft whatever qb you like most, and get eleventy million picks for that number 2 pick.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
MHJr > eleventy million picks
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
I disagree. Sure megatron is a hall of famer, but how many playoff games did that team win? Give me three first rounders plus…and let someone else draft a qb second overall. 99.99 % of the time, I’d rather have three number ones than a MH jr type prospect, and this instance is no different.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
People way overvalue 1st rounders as well as their own ability to make good with them.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
The Bears currently have the number 1 overall pick because they own the Panthers' selection from the Bryce Young trade, not because they themselves "earned" the top selection.
Though to be fair, they have thus far "earned" the second overall pick, so there's that.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Trade both picks for the rest of the draft.
Word is this is shaping up to be a monster draft class so if you wanna rebuild, this is an awesome time to have a ton of picks

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
The draft “experts” believe there as many as seven potential quarterbacks that could go in the first round. It’s pretty stacked apparently.
Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon

Idealist will be furious but I'm all for handing Baker a Geno deal if he earns it and still draft a QB in the first.

Re: 2023 -2024 tankathon
Poor asset management. Poor player management. Poor people management. If you want Baker to be the QB you make him the QBotF with an extension much closer to a Daniel Jones level contract than Geno. Then you draft players to build around him.
