Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
An undersized receiver from Oregon who was productive. That's nice I suppose.
Our WR room is crowded now...but maybe we intend to carry a lot of wide outs and spread it out more this year? Who knows?

Can he return kicks? I liked the idea of Darden more than Darden himself

He's our new returner. Nice.

Kind of crazy we added a 154 pound player and 464 pound player.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
Why? He'll instantly be our best returner. Trey Palmer ain't it.

I don’t know, man. I read the same thing every two drafts around here. “plug-and-play rookie returner found in the 5/6/7th round.”BucsNBills wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 7:50 pmWhy? He'll instantly be our best returner. Trey Palmer ain't it.
Only to disappear during training camp or get cut a month into the season.

Never understand why anyone would complain about a 7th round pick.

To people like him, anything other than infinite praise for every draft pick is complaining.Snake wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 8:14 pmI don’t see it as complaining.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 8:06 pm Never understand why anyone would complain about a 7th round pick.

Should they just pass? 7th rounders have flaws. Pointing out that Tez Johnson weighs 160 pounds soaking wet isn’t profound.

Its also not a complaint if it is brought up. That you get so hot and bothered by that is a YOU problem.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 9:00 pmShould they just pass? 7th rounders have flaws. Pointing out that Tez Johnson weighs 160 pounds soaking wet isn’t profound.

I won’t argue that point. Definitely at the flyer part of the draft:Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 9:00 pmShould they just pass? 7th rounders have flaws. Pointing out that Tez Johnson weighs 160 pounds soaking wet isn’t profound.
- Athletic, but tiny.
- huge, but unathletic.
- talented, but broken physically.
- looks good, but played horrible competition.
- system QBs.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
Have done some film watching and digging on him. 100% separation metric in college per PFF. Ebuka was 94% for a reference point. Add that to the YAC stuff and I think this can have an impact in the league. Going to be interesting to watch.

Yep. I’m not sure how saying a 7th round specialist might get cut is complaining. Especially one this small and only running a 4.5. You’re correct that we hear this same “rookie returner” story every year. I don’t mind Licht using a 7th to find one, but I’m not getting excited until I see the midget on the field.Snake wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 8:14 pmI don’t see it as complaining.Grahamburn wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 8:06 pm Never understand why anyone would complain about a 7th round pick.

I was surprised at his 4.5 speed. He looked quicker on film, maybe it's because he is so small it looks like he's moving faster.

That’s usually guys who are 200-230 pounds or so. Not 150 pounds.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
An interesting - mind blowing stat:
Over the last two seasons, Tez Johnson led all college wide receivers with 1,352 yards after catch.
Pairing this kid on the field with play action on opposite sides of Bucky will be sick. I smell OBP cooking up a special offense this season ... hope they signed Grizzy to a more effective no-compete contract.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
Not that this is in any way a comparison. Just reminds me of hearing how Anquan Bolden wouldn’t do anything in the nfl with 4.7 speed. Sometimes crazy athletics freaks just don’t work out and sometimes those who are subpar athletically(for the nfl) find a way.

Bo Nix Trade confirmed.Pirate Life wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 2:14 pmLicht mentioned their friendship in the call letting him know they were drafting him. Seems Johnson was also basically adopted by Bo Nix' family at some point between when they played in high school and then at college.
Re: Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
When I saw he had 3,800+ receiving yards in college, I thought it was a typo.
Sure he's small, but man, the dude apparently never got injured handling the ball all the time in spite of his frame. Sure, the NFL is a step up, but he hung around in the Big Ten. Typically little guys risk injury, but something tells me this guy knows how to protect himself and avoid contact.
There's also speed vs elusiveness. The receiver is going point A to point B, and maybe his man can get to point B faster than he can. But if he is able to convince the defender to run to point C while he runs to point B, he's open. My guess is we won't be sending him on go routes and fades, but I bet he will destroy some people on slants on routes that are meshed with other receiver concepts.

Re: Welcome to Tampa Tez Johnson
Also, his ability to make people miss is evident with over 1300 yards after the catch in TWO years ... Having him and Bucky on the field at the same time is going to be a problem for defenses.Ken wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 4:24 pm When I saw he had 3,800+ receiving yards in college, I thought it was a typo.
