I mean, I guess ...

"So well" presumes that the product on the field was in the plus category. Just because they're on the field doesn't mean they should be.

We've turned discarded FA and cheap Day 2/3 picks into SB starters before. While this particular batch hasn't made a SB yet, they are starters and I believe should be.

I mean, it remains to be seen in it's ultimate form, sure I'll grant you that. But we've seen the development of all the pieces well enough to this point to feel very good about the whole.

Pretty sure this applies to 32 teams....

And to the point @__Chef__ made, just because they are starters doesn't mean they earned it or should be starters. All teams have weak links they'd like to replace.

I'll grant you that there have been some defensive draftees that have turned out really well, but as an overall unit ... ehh ... I'll reserve praise for when they're back in the top 10 in something other than run defense. With the way these injuries have been stacking up I'm not sure that'll happen, but we can hope.

We're still waiting on the YaYa breakout. Kancey has been able to get to the QB, but has been hurt a lot and hasn't been great against the run. Dennis is still an enigma. Does Hall finally show up in his contract year because he hasn't done much his first 3? McCollum started strong last year, but seemed to tail off.

I would agree with other posters that we've drafted guys that are starters, but they aren't some dominant defense that should be applauded.

Who do we have the most doubts should be a starter? Dennis? Tykee? Parrish?

Yes.

Seriously though, anybody that isn't playing at a level contributing to a top-tier Defense.
Our Edge rush was a weak spot last year.
Linebacker coverage was a weak spot.
DBs were a weak spot.

Pretty much everywhere but the middle of the DL had plenty of room for improvement.

Some of this will/could have compounding effects. Elite pressure makes coverage look better. Elite coverage makes rushers look better. etc.

You usually have maybe a handful of true amazing players in any top tier defense. The rest are usually guys that are "good enough". Guys that would start on 16 teams. Would get a good size contract if FA. Just solid floor guys who can play complimentary roles.

I think YaYa for example is more this than truly elite. But that's perfectly fine too. You need that. What we've been missing, and I've said for awhile, is that spear point. That catalyst. White was suppose to be that, and flashed that, but that obviously didn't happen.

I think Hassan can be that. Open everything up for the rest of that front 7. Which then disrupts things more for our secondary. It's a ripple effect.

If we can just stay at that typical plus range of health you see from deep playoffs and SB winning teams, we'll see that. If our defense gets more than 13 snaps together before the post season we'll see that.

And yes obviously we won't know what happens until it happens.

Yes, I'm cautiously optimistic. Now, I'm a fan which is short for fanatic, so when he has a back breaking turnover, I'll be an irrational turd against him, but I'm enjoying this smart, mature, turnover free "run" Baker is leading us through right now.

Yes he did. The new president of the Baker Haters Club is @CannonFire. He is still hanging on so they’re in good hateful hands.

He's had several turnover worthy plays through these first two games. Lucky so far, but he's also putting the team on his back without all of his normal complimentary pieces, which is what great QB's do.

Even in commercials they talk shit about him. I am convinced the guy literally needs that in order to function or otherwise he will make silly mistakes
