What do you know about his injury that the Bucs and Godwin’s doctors don’t?
From an ethical standpoint, I would never claim to know more about someone who isn’t under my care.

Speaking generally, I think it’s too early for his specific injury.

He didn’t look good to me, today. Sluggish, tentative.
IMO he’d look sluggish and tentative no matter when he came back. Nothing can prepare you for playing in an NFL game except for doing the thing. I was very pessimistic about his injury and return but didn’t see anything today that made me think he can’t play his way back to form.

It's not just that he looked rusty. That was to be expected.

It's that he's clearly not healthy. He can't cut off that ankle. Literally didn't try once today to cut off that side. As such, there's literally no reason to pay much attention to him. 3 catches on 10 targets for 26 routes.

When he got pressed today, it completely threw him off and he didn't finish his routes. His catch radius is smaller, as he can't elevate or extend for passes in ways he use to.

When we put him in motion it was to the right each time to get him a running start. Still didn't do anything.

In the run game, he was basically a decoy. I didn't see him block much, which is something he's usually very good at.

For whatever strange reason the Bucs FO felt they had to generate a marketing campaign around Godwin & Wirfs returning today. It honestly felt as if with Godwin they wanted to prove everyone wrong regarding his prognosis. But he obviously isn't ready.

I agree. I don't think Godwin looked ready. The only question is whether that is mechanical or mental.

Not sure why I didn't put 2 and 2 together there.

The timeline was always October for him. Getting him back September 28th did us no favors at all. This team does very reactionary things sometimes.

Yall trying to read the tea is hilarious.

It was his first game back in forever. Against the best damn team assembled in decades. Two insanely talented CBs, and studs at safety too. Guy played as well or better than I could have hoped for in his first meaningful snaps in almost a calendar year, in the teeth of the strongest defense he will see until (hopefully) the playoffs.

Godwin didn't play up to his standards. Drops, alligator arms, not fighting through contact and contesting the catch as he's used to.

But I'm not upset about it. His first couple of weeks back were going to be a struggle, and he was struggling. The only way to get used to playing football is by playing football, and teammates treating you with kid gloves in practice wearing shorts is a world of difference to making plays on active defenders trying to feed their families.

He will get there. Not today. Maybe not for the next few weeks, to be honest. I think he'll get there, though.

It’s not that complicated. He looked physically diminished.

The question is whether he’s at risk of further injuring himself or experiencing a setback. Or if he can/will continue progressing in his physical recovery while preparing for regular season games going forward.

I suppose the other issue: is he an asset or liability on the field in his current state? Would somebody else do a better job currently?

You're trying to hard to be insightful and instead coming off as an asshole.

No one has said something that wasnt true. Go watch the game. He looked diminished. He can't cut off that ankle. He was super slow off the line.

If him catching 30% of his passes coupled with 2-3 drops was "better than you could've hoped for" then you're basically admitting that him being a liability on the field was perfectly fine for you. He was just that today.

Rumors of his demise after his first live action will be a joy to discuss during the offseason.

I cannot imagine a scenario where Godwin comes back after a year off, and looks exactly like his very best of the past. I would expect him to look EXACTLY like he looked today. Anyone that takes a year away from any job comes back rusty, full stop. That is the way the brain works, particularly between the muscle memory and the synapses firing in the brain. Godwin has to have some games to get his sea legs back. I cannot even fathom there is any kind of debate about this. Absurd.

Again, it’s not a matter of him looking rusty as much as it is him looking like he’s playing injured, which he does and clearly is. You can be rusty and still look healthy. He doesn’t look healthy. At all.

We shall see. I don’t think there is enough evidence to prove if he is gimpy or rusty. But we will likely know for sure this week one way or the other.

Honestly I didn't expect him to play at all today. I thought this was a strategic deception.

Given that he did play, and was actually >< this close to making some key plays IMO was/is a really good sign of things to come.

He is asked about it in the locker room and calls it rust himself. Said he felt great to be on the field. 7:09 minute mark

Imagine think a WR who can’t cut off of his injured ankle or accelerate off the LOS is “a good sign of things to come”.

Gonna chalk this up to casuals being casuals and keep it moving.

Would you expect him to admit he’s still hurt? A WR who can’t cut is like a QB who can’t do a 5 step drop. The fact that people ACTUALLY think that’s normal speaks volumes about the audience I’m having this discussion with.

A month ago I would’ve been happy if Godwin was just running and doing some practice drills by this point. Obviously he and the medical staff thought he was healed enough to start playing again. And he didn’t re-injure himself or look like he couldn’t handle being on a football field against a very physical defense. He looked exactly like a guy coming back from a major injury. If he looks like he did today all season then we can talk, but overall I’m very encouraged that he was able to play in a game before October and expect he’ll continue getting better each week.
