Not always. Sometimes there's that one person who thinks they're trying to qualify for the World Series of Poker when playing $2 max bet.

Truly. It is a regular Sunday night thing. What’s really funny is that none of us drink and we’re still laughing our faces off.

LOL, we didn't have to. Kind of a funny story.

My best friend would always have "the guys" over the last Friday of every other month for poker night. Well, one time, of the guys he invited (Keith, a guy he worked with. After a couple times showing up, Keith brought his cousin George. I knew we were in trouble 5 minutes into the night when he talked about how he won a $500 pot online the prior weekend in a Texas Hold'em tournament. I looked at my friend and we both rolled our eyes as if to say "here we go".

We generally just play to have fun, we rotate the deal and the dealer would call a random game. Once in a while there'd be a game with wild cards and the first game that had one, the third of the night, good ole George says "what kind of crap is that!". From that point on we knew this guy was going to be a pain in the ass. He all of a sudden because the Poker Authority and commented on every game and why it was good, bad, fun, or stupid. Now, prior to his deal, every game had an opening anti between 15 cents and a quarter. His turn came up and he called, shocker... Hold'em. Everyone bought in for $10, no one is trying to rich... except this guy. He called the blind $5/$10. All of said, "get the f out of here". After about 15 minutes of arguing with the guy, he walked out. He said, "I thought you guys wanted to play real poker". My friend says, "No, we want to play poker, with real friends". The dude never came back.

The main reason why we had a certain betting rules was because there was one game we played called Guts. I think people call it "Drop Poker"? It's 3-card poker where everyone holds their cards face down in front of them, the dealer counts to 3 and says "Drop". If 2 or more people stay in, the winner of the hand takes the pot and the people who lost doubled what was taken. So if 3 people stayed for a $1 pot, the person who won took the $1 and the other 2 people put in $2 each, so now the pot has $4. The game keeps going until only 1 person stays in. If that person beats the dummy hand (3 cards dealt during the deal that was never shown), they win the pot and the game is over. If that person loses to the pot, they triple. Well, as you can imagine, at one point... again we only buy in for $10, there $85 in the pot. A dude with a straight flush 8-10, lost to a 9-J straight flush... to the dummy hand and had to put in $255 now putting the pot at $340. Everyone was on edge. Of course though, there will be people who find that funny and will laugh out loud. Well, it was worse when one of those guys played the next hand against the dude that just lost $255 and beat him with an Ace high flush to a King high flush. There was a fight that night... those 2 never came back. They used to be good friends, they haven't talked to each other since. It's been over 25 years.

My montly game is a dealers choice game, we play sliders, queen follow the queen, Michael Jordon, suicide, push with a buy or a replace, 6 card throw one back (a game I made up), pineapple, crazy moe, badoky, packets, guts, 7 card no peak, cris cross, pass the trash… I know there are some I’m forgetting.

What games do y’all play that are not on my list?

I'm willing to bet that most of the games we play are similar to yours, just with different names. Guts & pass the trash we do play as well. We don't play follow the queen that often, oddly. We play Baseball (night & day), Football (both variations of 7-card stud, just that wilds are based on the sport). For baseball, wilds are 3's & 9's and you can buy an extra card with a 4. Football, 3's and 7's are wild and you get a free extra card with a 2. Low man roll your own, is a 7-card stud game where you chose which cards to show. Dealer deals out 3 cards to everyone, you just choose which card to show. Everyone bets. Dealer deals out the 4th card face down, again, you choose which card to show, and everyone bets. The caveat is that the lowest card face down, is wild for you. The kicker is, any like card to that low card is also wild. If you have a pair of 5's face up and a 5 face down, you have 3 wild cards (obviously, only if the 5 face down is the lowest card). We also play "2-4". Game play is the same as guts, the differences are that you play with 4 cards, not 3, and 2's and 4's are wild... only and always. Also, the only thing that counts is pairs, 2 of a kind, two-pair, 3 of a kind, and 4 of a kind. No straights or flushes... or obviously full houses.

One game that people like playing is Auction poker. Everyone is dealt 5 cards and then 5 cards are laid out in the middle. (sometimes we'll use 7 if we only have 5 people). The 5 cards in the middle are auctioned off 1 at a time. The first card is flipped and people have a chance to bid on it. If no one does, we move on to the next card. But, if anyone bids on it, its auctioned off until one person bids the most and wins the card. That person puts the money in the pot. They take that card and replace it with one from their hand... then everyone gets to bid on that card. That process continues until you get through all 5 cards in the middle. At the end, everyone has their hand and they can bet or fold.

We also play screw your neighbor and "31" which is a variation of screw your neighbor, just that you get 3 cards and play it like Rummy.

Ooooo I forgot about low man roll you own! I need to reintroduce that! Six cards throw one back is a lot of fun because everybody gets six cards and then everybody throws one back. Those cards become three rows of five and then it has played like Omaha. However, we also play ambush where the five cards remaining in your hand can play as the five card hand (so you play none on the board). So you can either play two cards out of your hand, and three on the board of the three Omaha rows or all 5 in you hand. If you wanna know how to play any of the others, let me know and I will explain them. I also made up an auction game, but it’s different than yours. For mine, everybody gets two cards dealt face down and then a card is turned up to the first player to the left of the dealerand it’s auctioned off. if no one buys it the person that it first went to is stuck with it and there’s no returning to auctioning that card again. Then the deal rotates and next card goes to the next person and his auctioned off, etc. We have had cards go for as much as $35 when people needed it to complete a straight flush. All of our games are high low with the wheel being low.

I don’t know the game screw your neighbor how does that go?

Also, if someone wants to call queen, follow the queen they can call any card wild instead of the queen so they could call for example, nine follow the nine, since nines are so useless anyway a lot of times we make them wild instead of the queen.
