I believe it was Grizz who didn’t want Baker to play because he believed Baker understood the playbook and had a great camp

Today, Todd Bowles said Mayfield won’t play this preseason, in part, because of how unified he is with rookie playcaller Josh Grizzard.

“It’s the chemistry with everybody going in sync, so I feel like [Mayfield] and Grizz is in sync right now,” Bowles said. “So I don’t feel like I need to play him the last [preseason] game.”

Edit 2: I was reading something about Grizz, and I’m wondering if this is a good thing.

Before coming to Tampa Bay, Grizzard was an assistant with the Miami Dolphins under Mike McDaniel. They ran a lot of motion there, and it seems like he's set to continue that trend heading into the 2025 season with the Buccaneers.
"When Grizz was in Miami, it was, 'How do they get Tyreek [Hill] to not be doubled?' So his background is how to motion, how to get certain looks out of the defense," Mayfield said. "Our third-down stuff last year, a lot of it was Grizz. He was our third-down pass game coordinator. So we trust in that. Just having the communication of knowing him before, we don't have to get to know each other. We can kind of just say what we're thinking."

Think back to the QB battle of 2023....Final PS game, Trask got the start. Baker didn't play. We saw how that worked out.

Eh, I'll take a stab at it. Trask is starting on Saturday because it's basically his last opportunity to prove he should be the 2. unless Teddy gets hurt or just looks worse than terrible in whatever capacity he plays after Trask, i think he's making the roster.

they could keep 3 QBs, but it doesn't make a ton of sense to do it. throw Trask onto the PS; no one's going to poach him anyway, unless he just lights it up this weekend. Even if he does, it's not like he's been the model of consistency, so i just don't think there's a ton of risk there.


But I like the idea of having a proven QB with multiple years of experience in live NFL games, and has had a lot of success, backing up Baker, just in case something bad happens and Baker has to miss a couple games.

I trust Bowles on this. I was a Trask over Baker gal. I was wrong (write down the date, I said it). Bowles clearly saw Baker’s talent, drive, potential and leadership when, for the most part, the rest of the league had written him off. So whomever Bowles decides to keep for our QB (s) I am good with it.
