Welcome Baker Mayfield
Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
The more Cannonfire and Acmillis talk about Mayfield's turnover. The more I am convinced they are sort of right We need a quarterback like Tom Brady, John Elway, and Patrick Mahomes, all of whom have led their teams to victory based on their performance. Do you genuinely believe that Mayfield will lead us to a comeback victory in under two minutes? How many of you expect him to throw a game ending int?
Mayfield will not lead us to the Super Bowl if he keeps fumbling or throwing interceptions often
Ifhe can lower his turnovers and work with the new OC to run the ball more, we definitely have a shot at winning it all. Maybe

Baker had 3 come from behind wins this season.
One of them was a thriller @ Nawlins.

Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
I agree that he was insane this season, but when it comes to the playoffs, it’s a different ball game.
Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
2024 is the year I have subconsciously become a huge fan of Mayfield. It has very little to do with his statline and more to do with how he held it together and had the offense be competitive during the weeks both Evans and Godwin were out. Also he's no longer a one sided beneficiary, but rather a guy capable of rising to occasion with a by hook or by crook attitude and elevating the offense around him.
He still commits a few painstaking mishaps in game, starting with his reluctance to step into throws with imminent big hits. Happy feet with some disturbance of pocket. Feeling pressure when it isn't there. Bad sacks etc. But outside of the big 4, every QB has some flaws you wish they would clean up. Baker's dog mentality makes up partly for his issues handling pressure and puts him comfortably above the likes of Golden boy Herbert.
He's a better version of Jameis and literally the guy we were hoping Jameis would become. I'd argue that Baker is currently the 7th best QB in the league, with Stafford, Daniels and Dak Prescott ahead of him (FU, I think Prescott is one of the most underrated players in NFL). He's the mother fucking captain of the ship right now.

Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
I think the Howdy Doody (I can't believe you guys don't see it) offense last year had Baker take more risks. Maybe why the offense was so good was more risk more reward was why turnovers were up.
Compared to last year in Canales offense which was a little more conservative, Baker rarely turned it over.
With Howdy Doovall gone and a new OC trajectory is less ints than this past year. Or let's say in the middle.

Which of them are we promoting from the practice squad first?

Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
Nah, Baker was throwing a lot more horizontal than vertical in Coen's offense. His average depth of target was among the lowest in the league until the last 4-5 games of the season. The interceptions were mostly Baker's inconsistency, often not seeing the underneath defender.Central_Buc wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 11:13 pm I think the Howdy Doody (I can't believe you guys don't see it) offense last year had Baker take more risks. That's just not true man. Go look at Bakers playoff stats.
Baker played great in the playoffs this year. Is not his fault he only got 18 attempts.

Baker's air yards per attempt was 3.8 y/a weeks 1 to 14 and he was near bottom of the league during this time. He threw 13 INTs in those 13 games.
His air yards/attempt the last 4 games of season was 6 y/a, the best in NFL by far. He threw 3 ints in those 4 games.
Based on this please tell me what you think is wrong with my assessment. Very interested to find out if there is a rational argument from which I can learn or if someone is plainly bootzing.

18 attempts.... Who cares? Did you actually watch the Washington game? Did he fumble? That's what I thought.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 2:30 am

He also threw a game ending interception in the 2024 playoff loss against the Lions.Mayfield fumbled the ball in the fourth quarter, which was recovered by Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner

Jc. You would think that google was a premium service and no one had access to it.
Baker's career playoff stats:
https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/baker- ... yoff-stats
Btw, Baker has actually played better in the playoffs than in the regular season, over his career not just in one game/season, and he's one of the very few that has significantly improved the quality of his play in the postseason among active QBs. And his PR is top-3 among active QBs that have at least 4 playoff games.
And because someone will ask the question, Baker has a 2-3 playoff record because he's never gone into the playoffs with a defense ranked higher than 18th.

JFC another off-season shitting on Mayfield every day. I've defended him the last 2 off-seasons and was proven right.
You guys can have at it if you want, Ima just put this thread on ignore.

Patrick Mahones fumbled a handoff that was less difficult in terms of timing than what happened with Baker.Phantom wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 3:44 am18 attempts.... Who cares? Did you actually watch the Washington game? Did he fumble? That's what I thought.BucsNBills wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 2:30 am

Not to mention the fact Baker took the snap from a rookie center then handed it to a rookie WR, yet somehow you just default to it being Mayfield's fault.
Also, Tom Brady's final pass as a Patriot was a pick 6 in the playoffs. Interceptions happen.
But if you need to make Baker the fall guy because of his 3 incompletions and a team fumble... Then you do you kiddo.
I'll choose to live in objective reality where Baker by any measure played well in the Washington game. But when any QB only gets 18 pass attempts and their defense can't get off the field, they're not going to win a lot of games.

That's correct, baker did throw an INT at the end of that game.
Let's see how honest you people can be now about that game.
Did Mike Evans drop two sure TD passes earlier in that game? Both of which hit him right in the hands, yes or no? that was a rhetorical question; obviously he did. So, let me ask you: why aren't you pissing on Evans for dropping what would've been either game-tying or game-winning TDs that any PS-level WR would've caught?

Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
Mayfield is fine as long as he has a contract that is easy to get out from under. He shouldn't be paid $40M and should never carry a cap hit of more than $20M (I'd prefer $15M). As I've said before, there's literally only 5 guys better than everyone else and about 25 guys who are virtually the same player and given the right situation, can look better than somewhere else. Mayfield is one of the 25, not 5. No team should ever pay any of those 25 guys more than $20 to $25M a year and their deals should never last more than 3 at a time (after their rookie contract). The contract Mayfield got, all but guaranteed 1 of 2 outcomes at the end of this season... he was either going to be released or have his contract restructured. Hopefully Licht does the smart thing and give him a 2-yr extension to wipe out those void years, give him cash, and spread out the bonus over next year and the 3 remaining. If we can get someone this draft to replace Baker after the 2025 season, then that's what should happen.

I like the general idea but I disagree that 6-30 are the same QB. No one is going to confuse Mayfield for Mahomes or Allen but he is a clear step up from the middle of the pack guys.CannonFire wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 6:08 pm Mayfield is fine as long as he has a contract that is easy to get out from under. Just out of curiosity, who are your 5 guys. For me the obvious answers are Mahomes, Allen, Burrow and Jackson. That 5th spot is open for debate and is closer to being in the Mayfield tier rather than that S tier.

Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
He made this same argument last year. Baker eviscerated all doubt and cemented himself as a top 10 QB. @CannonFire got called out on it and he doubled down that he’s just a guy and any QB could have done what Baker did last year. All credibility was lost.Terry Tate wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 11:47 pmI like the general idea but I disagree that 6-30 are the same QB. Meh, at least four of Baker's INTs were on the receiver(s). MacMillan tipped a perfect pass into the arms of a defender. Some receiver ran a bad route that led his defender right into the passing lane for another. I think Otton may have tipped one that ended up being picked. LVR's Chaisson read the screen and then made one of the most athletic plays you'll ever see a DE make to tip the pass to himself for a pick. Bredeson failed to engage his assigned DT on another and allowed that guy to jump up and tip a pass to Cam.
Never mind both Miller and I think Jarrett allowing defenders to take passes away from them that hit them in both hands.
Basically, this season the ball bounced against Baker and TB. In any one of those moments things could've gone a little differently, and those don't become INTs.
I mean, in an ideal world, if a couple TB receivers don't drop a few balls and a few guys do their jobs instead of allowing them to be picked, Baker's TD/INT ratio looks more like 46-48 TDs/10-12 INTs.
Re: Welcome Baker Mayfield
Outside of that wild fling with the GOAT, Baker is already the most Buc QB in out history. Our only multi probowl one too.
2 for 2 in probowl division winning years.
Not too shabby.
